Welcome from the Governing Board

As a Governing Board, we are very proud of our school which has been serving our local community for over 40 years. Downsway is a very special caring school where meeting the needs of each child is at the heart of everything we do. We are committed to excellence and passionately believe in providing our children with the very best opportunities to develop both academically and personally.

Our caring and nurturing ethos is based on our distinctive values and a belief that every child can be successful as encapsulated in our strap line, 'Challenging Minds. Changing Futures”.

Last year saw the implementation of new national testing arrangements with higher expectations for both Year 2 and Year 6 children. Whilst this presented a series of challenges for both staff and children, we are pleased with our 2016 Year 6 outcomes. Whilst our results were broadly in line with national expectations, our Reading progress was very impressive positioning Downsway 7th nationally.

Our community continues to support us and this is reflected in the continuing demand for places, this year we are over-subscribed again for entry into our Early Years Foundation Stage for September 2017 and have a waiting list in operation.

We ensure our children receive a broad and balanced education. The school has a strong sporting tradition and plays an active part in a number of local fixtures for football, tag rugby, kwik cricket and cross country. We value the Arts at Downsway and our children enthusiastically participate in productions; this year saw “Porridge” performed by Year 3 and 4 children. Our annual Year 6 production this year will be “Bugsby Malone”. Past Year 6 performances include: Hamlet, A Midsummers Dream and a parody of Macbeth written by the children.

We have a very strong partnership with our cluster group of local schools, which has provided enrichment opportunities for our children namely workshops and performances in drama and music, sporting events, puzzle day and an annual challenge quiz.

Each year our Year 6 children spend a week at an outdoor bounds centre in Shropshire participating in a variety of team week activities and challenges.

Last year the school was granted exclusive use of the former children’s centre by West Berkshire Council. We have renamed the space as “The Hub” and are using the building as a teaching space and as a venue for our new Breakfast Club.

We are delighted to have such superb grounds and buildings and remain committed to upgrading our facilities. Over the past year, we have installed an outdoor climbing wall, remodeled our former ICT area to create: a teaching kitchen, a new IT learning area and a group room. We are currently refurbishing the Ladies toilets. Our next project is to install a canopy to provide an outdoor teaching area for the Year 1 classroom.

I am very proud to be Chair of Governors at Downsway School. The Governors are very committed to supporting the school and working with the staff to offer the best education for the children in our local community.
